‘The edge between’

‘The edge between’

23 May - 6 Jul 2024, Craft + Design Canberra

‘The edge between’ is a series of ceramic works responding creatively to the principles of the regenerative earth care system of permaculture. Each piece draws on one of the 12 permaculture principles to create a collection of new works that contain a positive, non-judgmental message about how each of us can choose to change our behaviour to make a difference. Now more than ever we need to examine our relationship to planet Earth. Permaculture, with its emphasis on self-reliance and positive actions to work harmoniously with nature, has been widely adopted around the globe. Permaculture is founded on the 3 ethics of earth care, people care, and fair share. The 12 permaculture principles, developed in Australia in the 1970s by David Holmgren, are design guidelines examining how we can live harmoniously within the finite resources of earth and its inhabitants. This knowledge has continued to evolve, with permaculture practitioners being instrumental in seeding numerous projects nationally and throughout the world. The permaculture principles are the source of inspiration for this new body of work and are explored through the materiality of ceramics, including form, surface treatment, representation and imagery. This project draws together my love of ceramics and extensive experience as a permaculture and landscape designer, involvement in community-led projects such as the Lyneham Commons Food Forest, and a deep concern for the way our actions are impacting the planet and the future of its inhabitants.
